Now Comes The Night – Rob Thomas

Written by Rob Thomas, published on the album "Something to be"

When the hour is upon us
And our beauty surely gone
No, you will not be forgotten
No, you will not be alone

And when the day has all but ended
And our echo starts to fade
No you will not be alone then
And you will not be afraid
No you will not be afraid

When the fog has finally lifted
From my cold and tired brow
No I will not leave you crying
And I will not let you down
No I will not let you down
I will not let you down

Now comes the night
Feel it fading away
And the soul underneath
Is it all that remains
So jus slide over here
Leave your fear in the fray
Let us hold to each other
Till the end of our days

Rob,

I just learned that my father has terminal cancer (a tumor in his Pancreas that has spread to his stomach). I am not really sure how long he has to live, as I have requested from my Mother that I do not wish to know. My reason for making this choice is quite simple…I just want to enjoy and cherish every moment I have left with him, without subconsciously counting the days.

Anyway, my reason for submitting a comment here is because I came into work early this morning to get some work done and take off early so I could spend the afternoon with Dad. I decided to listen to your album “Something to Be” and as soon as I heard the first bits of the piano on “Now Comes the Night”, I immediately knew that it was going to be a special song….I just had NO IDEA how truly meaningful it would be.

I plan on sharing this song with my Mother and Father as I feel that it will probably say exactly what they are feeling. I know that poems, lyrics, songs, music, etc. can have many different meanings to many different people (that is the true beauty of any piece of art), but I was wondering if you could please relay to me the true meaning of the song? If you could do so, I cannot put into words how grateful I would be.

If not, I understand and would still like to THANK YOU so much for providing a song that will forever be etched in my memory.

Sincerely,
Fred Carroll Jr.
