Carla  took part in the Rob Thomas Fanclub sweepstakes and was invited to be an extra on the set of the new Rob Thomas video to his new single “Someday”. Here you can read her story and view her photos from the day. She generously allowed for her report and pictures to be added to this website. So here is her “Someday” story :

“So I guess some of you want to hear about my experience at the video shoot. I will tell you as much as I can remember. I was working on 4 hrs. sleep in the past 2 days so I may have forgetten some things.

I always seem to have some sort of travel problems when I go to NYC & Friday was no exception. I had ordered a shuttle to take me to my hotel so when I got to the airport at 9:30 pm I confirmed it and they said 20 mins. 45 mins later I called and they said they would have to order one again. (I think they forgot to do it the first time!) They said it should only be about 7 mins tho. 30 mins later still no shuttle. I call again very angry and they said the guy had come and called for me but I wasn’t there. I told them that was a lie because I was sitting in the same spot the whole time & the terminal was almost empty so I would have heard or seen someone calling for me. I was so pissed! Mad Finally at around 11:30 pm the shuttle picks me up. I was the second last of 11 to get dropped off so I didn’t get into my room until 1:00am!!! Needless to say the shuttle driver got no tip from me!

I decided to not even bother sleeping because I had to get up at 3:30 am. And the loud people at the restaurant across the street wouldn’t have let me anyhow. Roll Eyes I laid down with my eyes closed for a couple of hours, got up & dressed in my 70’s clothes, checked out and walked to the staging area at this Serbian church.

I got there a little before 5 and there were already about 20 people there. We all sat in this non-air conditioned room waiting for everyone to arrive. They had professional extras as well as fan club. The professionals all got wardrobe & makeup. For the fanclub peeps they checked out what we were wearing and either approved it or told us to put something else on. If you didn’t have anything they liked they gave you something to wear.

The woman in charge of casting told us we could not take pics or video or we would get kicked off the shoot. I guess thursday there had been a problem with that. I had my small camera in my purse just in case! Wink

We finally went to the location around 6:30am? I think. They had us line up against these railings on either side of a small curved road. All the paid extras were in the parade and then they picked some of the fanclub to be in it too. They explained that we were to watch the parade and not the camera and not Rob. (HA! like that could ever happen!) We did the scene over & over for 2 hours. Just the chorus not even the whole song. They would keep adjusting and moving people around for each take. They told us to sing along and we did of course.

Finally Rob came in a minivan around 9 am.It was so exciting. He said hi & took pics of the extras and tweeted them. They had Rob stand at the end of the route and sing the chorus a few time and then the director pointed to me and another girl & guy and said to come with him. I said what for & he said trust me so i did. He postioned me on one side & the girl on the other and then brought Rob right between us! Eeker Then he said get closer! OMG! Rob was so close I was actually touching him the whole time! Needless to say I was shaking like a leaf. The people on the other side that I had met earlier were mouthing OMG to me and I was trying very hard to seem cool. Don’t know if I succeeded! Razzer The hairdresser came over and fixed his hair and he asked her if she was in a better mood today and she told him she is always in a better mood after talking to him so he started slow dancing with her. It was so cute. I finally decided that I would get up my courage and speak! I said “Rob I’ll be seeing you on Friday” and he said “Oh really?” I said “yeah I’m going to Tempe” and he said “Oh that’s cool! That show is gonna rock” and i said “I know.” That’s it! but for me it was the first time I’ve been able to form a coherent thought when next to Rob. Then he sang the chorus a few times and I had to stay still looking at the parade and not him. It was very hard! They were taking the shot from behind so if it makes the video I will be the blue shoulder to the left of Rob. Big Grin

After that scene they switched us around again so I was on the other side. They put Rob in the crowd in a few different spots as he was watching the parade & singing. They had some kids around him and he was so great with all of them.

We broke for luch around 12? and everyone from extras to just people off the streets surrounded Rob trying to get a pic with him. I did manage to get one too. He finally had to leave cuz the cops wanted us out of the street. They gave us pizza for lunch and around 1 pm we went back out and stood around doing nothing for about an hour. It was kind of boring and my feet were killing me because I had wedge sandles on. It also got chilly in the afternoon.

Finally around 2 we started again and Rob sang in front of the choir & some other spots until 3 and he thanked everyone for coming and then left.

We stayed out there until about 3:30 but it really started to rain harder so they let us go back to the church. Some people left but the director’s assistant came in and asked for volunteers for a background scene and me and 6 others raised our hands. They took us to a different street and we had to walk in the background while they filmed in front of some cars across the street.

I left at 5 and quickly changed and walked to my hotel because the shuttle was picking me up there at 6. No probelms with it this time!

So that basically is that! I had a great time even with all the standing around and chilly conditions and aching feet. it was so cool to be involved in a music video! I am so happy that i decided to go because i would have been kicking myself for the rest of my life if I hadn’t. What’s funny is that 7 + hours of shooting will boil down to about 1 to 2 mins in the video! I don’t know if I’ll even see myself in it but I hope I’m in at least one shot.

I did manage to take some pics inbetween takes. I never took any while we were shooting. Although in the afternoon alot of people just walking around the city started pushing their way in & taking pics. The crew didn’t say anything to them and even asked them to be part of the background crowd. Not sure if you will be able to see all the cell phones & digital cames in any shots!!
